Bill Nye - Comets and Meteors

1. When you look up in the sky and see a star with a fuzzy tail it is really a comet.

2. Comets and meteors are made up of the same "stuff" as what other objects in our solar system? planets

3. When were the comets and meteors formed? when the planets were- 12-13 billion years ago.

4. Orbits of comets are classified as elongated elipse which may take many years to orbit the sun.

5. All comets orbit the sun.

6. About 10 years ago, scientists witnessed a comet that had broken up into large chunks hit which planet in our solar system?Jupiter,.

7.  These comet impacts left large black spots the size of which planet?Earth

8. Meteors are chunks of rocks and metal that orbit the sun.

9. Comets are chunks of dust and ice that also orbit the sun.

10. A meteorite  is a chunk of rock that actually hits the surface of the earth.

11. 12 or 13 billion years ago, there was a huge explosion called the Big Bang.

12. Why isn't the earth covered with meteorite impact craters like the Moon? The friction from the atmosphere hitting the meteor causes it to burn up.

13. As a comet gets closer to the sun, the heat and solar wind from the sun vaporizes the ice and creates a Ion tail which always points away from the sun.

14 A "shooting star" is really a Meteor.

I wanted to let you know that questions 3 and 11 are incorrect. The Big Bang took place 13.8 billion years ago. The comets and meteors in our solar system were formed at the time our solar system formed, 4.6 billion years ago. Thank you for teaching students about this stuff, we need more kids excited about STEM
